The recipe for a successful performance car includes a potent engine, a sure-footed chassis and - perhaps the most important ingredient - powerful brakes. The Golf R32 has all 3 in abundance. What we've done R32's stopping power is provided by a braking system similar to the GTI's. But we've adapted it to cope with the extra performance of this, the ultimate Golf. Like the GTI, the R32 has disc brakes at the front and rear, except that they're bigger - we've increased their diameters by 33mm at the front, and 24mm at the rear. This means there's a greater surface area for the pads to grip. The discs are ventilated too, to help prevent a build up of excess heat under repeated heavy braking - the cause of 'brake fade' - while a bigger brake servo increases the capacity of the system. Finally, to emphasise the special nature of the R32's brakes, the callipers are painted blue .
