The Volkswagen Passat Estate 2.0 TDI Sport 4Motion is a really special towcar. Confidence-inspiring four-wheel drive, excellent electric handbrake and well-judged suspension all ensure a reasonable score, but the acreage of storage in the boot and impressive diesel engine helped close the deal. Factor in resale values and five-star crash safety ratings, the £22,000 price tag looks great value, if not exactly cheap. Four-wheel drive does put a dent in the fuel economy but for impressive all-round ability the Passat was a worthy winner of the Towcar Award of 2007. Of the class winners, it's the best combination of weight, price and capability. Stable, spacious and practical, with the assurance of four-wheel drive.
