TDI engine

Ensures you can have performance as well as exceptional economy.

Overview

Our Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engines with common rail injection are responsive and fun to drive, as well as being incredibly efficient. Compared to the unit injector principle, the common rail technology noticeably reduces the engine noise level. Moreover, the new TDI common rail engines from Volkswagen achieve reductions in fuel consumption and emission values.

Technical

The common rail system is a high-pressure fuel injection system. The injection pressure is stored in a high-pressure fuel reservoir that supplies all fuel injectors. This high-pressure reservoir is often referred to as the 'common rail'. In this system the generation of pressure and the fuel injection processes are separate. The majority of our TDI engines are turbocharged using variable turbine geometry. An intercooler is also incorporated into the system which lowers the temperature of the hot compressed gas leaving the turbo which also enhances power and efficiency.
