Personal Exports

Drive a tax free Volkswagen

Are You Eligible?

All car retailers are entitled to sell tax free cars for use within the European Union, but Volkswagen supports retailers by offering expert tax-free buyer knowledge. This assistance ensures a smooth transaction for all participating retailers and you, the customer.

For a UK taxpayer buying a new Volkswagen in the UK, the provisions for claiming tax exemption from HM Revenue & Customs vary according to whether you are staying within or taking it out of the European Union.

Vehicles Bought In The UK And Staying In The EU

Vehicles exported from the UK to other member states in the European Union can be purchased free of tax in the UK and used in the UK for a limited period (60 days); the vehicle will be liable for VAT at the country of destination. A complete guide to the regulations is available from Customs and Excise in VAT notice 728.

Vehicles Bought In The UK And Being Taken Out Of The EU

Vehicles exported from the UK to states outside the European Union can be purchased free of tax in the UK and used in the UK for 6 or 12 months according to the criteria explained in VAT notice 705.

Further details can be found by visiting the HMRC website
