In order to consolidate its position on the South African market, the Volkswagenwerk GmbH acquires an interest in the "South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors Ltd. (SAMAD)", a company in Uitenhage predominately in English hands which imports dismantled Volkswagens and then assembles and sells them. In 1957, interest in the company is increased from 38% to 57.6%.
