TDI

Ensures you can have performance as well as exceptional economy

Our Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engines are responsive and fun to drive, as well as being incredibly efficient. It means you can enjoy substantially increased performance with more torque than traditional injection systems and benefit from good fuel economy and lower emissions.

We have been at the forefront of modern diesel engine technology for more than a decade. Back in 1996 we launched our then new generation of TDI engines. The move represented a considerable leap forward for diesel technology.

Barely three years later, in 1999, we raised the bar still higher with the arrival of our ‘PD’ technology. PD stands for Pumpe Düse, or unit injector. With PD technology, the fuel injectors - one for each cylinder - operate under far higher pressures than in a conventional diesel engine.

The result is better atomisation of the fuel. This leads to more power, greater engine torque, lower emissions and better fuel economy. In addition, all our TDI engines are turbocharged using variable turbine geometry. This delivers high boost pressures even at low engine speeds. And we incorporate an intercooler which lowers the temperature of the hot compressed air leaving the turbo which leads to even greater power and efficiency.
