Electric and Hybrid Cars
How is the mpg of a plug-in hybrid calculated? And what is the Extra Urban figure?
The miles per gallon (mpg) is a measure of how many miles a car can travel using one gallon of petrol or diesel. In the UK, this figure is calculated according to a standardised test approved by the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The test is divided into two parts, Part A and Part B. Part A of the test measures the output of the electric powertrain, while Part B measures output from the petrol engine. The figure you see for GTE models is the combined figure for how many miles the car will travel using both engines.
