Our Carbon Footprint

Car showroom heats up its energy-saving credentials
A Norfolk car retailer has introduced a new way of reusing its waste engine oil to heat its own showroom and service area.
Kings Lynn Volkswagen has converted its heating boiler to a specially engineered heating system, which runs on waste engine oil, in a venture that will reduce its utility and service bills by approximately £36,000 a year.
Project instigator and the retailer's brand manager, Martin Bennett, researched the recycling scheme for 18 months before selecting the right boiler and system that would meet the business needs.  A result that has seen the retailer reduce its carbon footprint by a staggering 10.3 tonnes, which equates to ten jumbo skip bags.
"We felt as a business we should take responsibility for the energy we were wasting. Having implemented all the obvious changes such as steel, paper and tyre recycling and fitting timers to various electric equipment, we felt there must be more we could do to make a greater impact,” explained Martin.
Previously, the Bergen Way retailer annually spent in the region of £30,000 a year on heating bills and a further £6000 for the safe collection and disposal of its waste engine oil.
The new boiler supplied by Kroll UK, extracts the waste engine oil directly from the storage tank in the service department. It is then filtered and automatically pumped into the new heating system. The unit produces 100 kilowatt of heat, which comfortable heats the 2000 sq ft building.
"Our service department generates approximately 600 litres of engine oil a month from car oil servicing and we require about the same amount to power the new boiler.
"The smoke-less system has been in operation for two months having met all the Council's requirements and I can happily say it is running smoothly.
"We carefully researched the various options over an 18 month period to be sure of the best solution. The manufacturer we choose is renowned as the market leader for waste oil heaters.”
In addition to installing an energy-saving boiler the Volkswagen retailer has also fitted washable filters to prevent further wastage and cost by using disposable alternatives.
