After signing a joint venture agreement with the Ching Fong Investment Co., Ltd." conglomerate in Taiwan on 10th July 1991, Volkswagen acquires one third of the shares of "Ching Chung Motor Co., Ltd." in Taipei. Until the completion of a production facility, Transporters and Caravelles are imported from Germany in order to establish the products on the local market and to build up a dealership network. The new automobile plant with a capacity of 30,000 vehicles a year starts the production of the Transporter and Caravelle models in November 1994. By setting up an export base for light commercial vehicles, VW rounds out its involvement in Asia. It is hoped that cooperative deliveries for the product on the Chinese mainland could lead to synergistic effects.
