Golf

Airbags

For the first time the Golf features a total of 7 airbags – including a knee airbag for the driver - to cushion the impact of collisions and reduce the risk of injury. As a safety feature, it's absolutely essential.

Overview

Why do we need airbags?

Because seat belts alone are not enough. In an accident, passengers can be thrown forward even when they're belted, increasing the risk of injuries.

That's where airbags come in. The front and second row seats of the Golf are equipped with 7 airbags: driver and front passenger airbags, front seat side impact airbags and a curtain airbag system for front and second row occupants, plus new knee airbag for the driver. Combined with seat belts, the airbags provide an exceptional level of protection for all occupants by cushioning the impact in the event of a collision.

What does the airbag do?

  • An airbag is deployed in the event of an accident to cushion the body and minimise the risk of injury.
  • Cushion the body in a side impact too.
  • Inflate and deflate in just milliseconds.

Technical

Prevention is always better than cure

We like to put our drivers on the road to safety. That's why we've included advanced active safety features in our cars to help prevent accidents. But sadly, accidents still happen. Even so, they need not cause injuries.

7 ways to cushion the blow

We've fitted no less than 7 airbags in the Golf – including front, side and curtain airbags – and, for the first time, a knee airbag system for the driver.

Our front and side airbags offer vital protection for the driver and front seat passenger. They serve to cushion the impact coming from the front and sides. They know just when to go off too, thanks to the smart sensors that measure the severity of a collision. So there's no need to worry about your airbags activating in a minor incident. And if the front passenger seat is empty, the airbag won't be activated.

New knee protection

The new knee airbag system offers extra protection for the driver's legs and feet from a hard impact with the steering column and instrument panel. In the event of a crash it deploys in milliseconds in front of the driver's knees and absorbs – in conjunction with the seatbelt and front airbag - a significant share of the energy to be reduced in the pelvic area.

The Golf also includes curtain airbags. These are housed within the roof – and designed to deploy downwards, protecting both front and rear passengers in the event of a collision.
