eTSI: the electrified combustion engine

Rear of VW Golf 8 with eTSI

eTSI stands for the mild hybrid technology from Volkswagen

Electrification of our drives is an important step on the way to zero-emission mobility. But those who do not want to switch completely to electric mobility can also drive with greater climate awareness in future. Because our technologies make Volkswagen vehicles with all engine types more economical. And with the eTSI we have developed a completely new drive form that combines performance and efficiency.

Our mild hybrid drives are equipped with an efficient 1.5-litre TSI engine which is coupled to a 48 V system plus 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG). The special feature of this drive is the fact that the power of the petrol engine is supported by a 48 V belt-driven starter-alternator and a 48 V lithium-ion battery. This means that the eTSI allows the vehicle to coast with the combustion engine switched off, for example. In addition, the 48 V system recovers energy when the vehicle is braked (brake energy recuperation). Both features make the eTSI significantly more economical than the conventional TSI engine.

Lower fuel consumptions, more performance and comfort thanks to the assistance of a 48 V lithium-ion battery.

Save more with more driving pleasure

A vehicle with eTSI drive is not just more economical but also offers more fun, particularly in stop-and-go traffic in inner cities. That is because every red traffic light becomes a new start where you can feel a completely new kind of driving pleasure. The reason for this is the fact that the 48 V system accelerates dynamically and powerfully straight away when driving off. The engine restart is also more comfortable. The eTSI therefore takes your driving-off performance into the fast lane thanks to the electric Boost function.
