Tiptronic transmission

Our 6-speed Tiptronic transmission lets you switch from automatic mode and take charge of gear changes when you want to.

Overview

Taking the strain Automatic transmission offers an easy, relaxed way of driving, especially on motorway hauls or when you're crawling around town in heavy traffic. Reclaiming control But there are times when you feel the need to reclaim positive control - say when overtaking or negotiating a steep hill. That's when Tiptronic transmission comes into its own, giving you the chance to select the gear you need manually for sportier hands-on driving.

Technical

The choice is yours In stop/start traffic, an automatic reduces strain on the engine, transmission and the driver. Tiptronic transmission has been designed to minimise engine noise by engineering the transmissions gear ratios to reduce engine revs at higher speed. This also has the added benefit of improving fuel economy. On a twisty road you can take control of the gears. By moving the gearlever our of 'D' you can change gear manually. Pushing the lever towards '+' changes up and towards '-' changes down. Using Tiptronic allows you to hang on to revs for longer for safer overtaking. Holding a lower gear, meanwhile, makes full use of engine braking when going down a steep hill, for example. Tiptronic puts you in charge. All the gearboxes in the Passat are filled with lifetime oil and need no routine maintenance.
