What BlueMotion offers you

You can feel good about driving a BlueMotion Volkswagen, knowing you've made a thoughtful choice for the environment. But, straightaway, you'll also notice the difference to your pocket. With BlueMotion you'll:

Save on fuel. With a combined fuel consumption figure of 74.3mpg the BlueMotion Polo can take you from London to the south of France on one tank.* That makes it one of the most efficient cars in its class. BlueMotion Golf Mark V delivers an impressive 62.8mpg. Fewer visits to the pumps mean lower fuel costs.
Save on tax. Drive the BlueMotion Polo and you pay no road tax at all. With CO2 emissions of just 99g/km, it falls into tax band A and escapes Vehicle Excise Duty. The BlueMotion Golf Mark V, with CO2 emissions of 119g/km, is in Band with a tax duty of just £35 a year. Compare this to the annual road tax bill of £400 for the most highly polluting cars.

Why BlueMotion?

Blue - the Volkswagen colour - symbolises the elements water and air, while Motion represents a move forwards towards the future. BlueMotion has one very important aim: to reduce the impact of our cars on the environment for future generations.

What we did

We looked at every way to make our cars cleaner and more efficient, while still being great to drive. And then we added all these small improvements together to create BlueMotion technology. The result is impressive fuel saving and significantly lower CO2 emissions.

How we did it

Our package of changes works to reduce loading on the engine, to save fuel and cut CO2 emissions.

Improved aerodynamics.

The smoother the airflow over your car, the less drag there is. That means better performance and fuel saving. So we've:

Streamlined the body, minimising gaps between panels
Combined headlights and indicators
Made radiator grilles and spoilers more efficient

Modified engines.

At the heart of BlueMotion is a modified advanced TDI engine

It's linked to longer gear ratios to cut engine revs and improve economy
New engine management software also cuts the idling speed
A highly efficient Diesel Particulate Filter significantly cuts CO2 emissions

Lowered weight.

Lighter cars use less fuel.

We've used lighter materials wherever possible
Fitted special lightweight alloy wheels
Added low rolling resistance tyres which use less engine power to move the car forward. They save fuel while still offering excellent performance

But it does not stop there, we keep on developing new technology to make our BlueMotions even more efficient. On the new Passat BlueMotion we have for the first time introduced automatic Stop/Start technology, which reduces fuel consumption and emissions during urban driving. The BlueMotion range represents nearly every Volkswagen model, including Polo, Golf Mark V, Golf Estate, Golf Plus, Jetta, Passat Saloon and Estate, Touran and Sharan.

The new Golf will be available with BlueMotion technology and is coming to the UK mid 2009.
