CAN data bus

With the amount of electronic components in cars increasing rapidly, Controller Area Network (CAN) data buses have taken over from conventional wiring techniques. This serial bus system serves as the basis for digital data exchange between sensors, actuators and control units. Apart from the short wiring routes, the CAN data bus also has the advantage that, if one component fails, the rest of the system continues to work normally, reducing the risk of complete system failure. Even the car's older electrical systems are increasingly being controlled via the CAN data bus for added safety and convenience. CAN data bus systems are subdivided into three categories: drive train - transmits signals from control units such as the engine management unit, transmission control and the ABS/ESP unit; comfort - crucial for climate control functions, for instance; and infotainment - for the signals received from car radios with speed-sensitive volume control.
