The second generation Passat started production in Emden in October 1980 until 31 March 1998 and was more elegant and roomier than the Mk I. It was a few inches longer and had a choice of 1.3-litre to 2.2-litre petrol engines and 1.6-litre to 2.2-litre diesel turbo engines, together with 4 or 5-speed manual, or 3-speed automatic transmissions. The Volkswagen's 4+E economy gearbox was also offered with some models. The range was facelifted slightly in 1985 introducing larger bumpers, a new grille and taillights, and some minor interior styling changes were made. The 2-door hatch was discontinued.
