The vehicle distribution centres at Sheerness and Grimsby prove insufficient to meet the needs of Volkswagen UK and it's decided to open a third distribution centre at the Port of Tyne in the North East. The centre covers 50 acres and enables Volkswagen Group UK to bring deep sea vessels in to the port and serve the retailers in the Northern part of the country. Around 60,000 Group vehicles would pass through the Port of Tyne in 2004, with opportunities for further growth. The new facility also incorporates a secure car park for 8,000 vehicles.
