Motability Car Scheme

The Scheme is for individuals in the UK with a disability or condition that makes it harder to get around. It allows them to exchange their qualifying allowance for:

• A new leased car
• Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)
• Scooter
• Powered wheelchair

A brand-new car every three years, you lease a car from the Motability Scheme and use it as your own. They also offer an all-inclusive package that provides:

• Insurance for up to three drivers
• Servicing and maintenance
• Full breakdown cover
• Tyre repair and replacement
• Adaptations to the car if required
• Home chargepoint and standard installation included in your lease when you choose an electric vehicle on the Motability Scheme, or access to the bp pulse network

• As long as you receive a qualifying mobility allowance and have at least 12 months left, you can exchange your allowance to lease a new car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV).
• For most vehicles, you will need to top this up with an Advance Payment. You’ll need to pay for any optional extras you choose too.

Generally, it will cost your entire qualifying allowance, which is paid directly to the Scheme. These payments cover:

• Insurance
• Tax
• Vehicle maintenance

There are a number of ways to get this information:

• Talk to the Motability specialist at your local Volkswagen Retailer, they can give you all the information you need.
• Arrange a test drive or ride to experience a Volkswagen first hand through a Volkswagen Retailer.

• Some of the model dimensions are already included above.
• You can also filter vehicles based on dimensions and capacity on the Motability Scheme website.

The time it takes to get your car through the Motability Scheme will depend on the model you order and any customisations that are required. We recommend that you reach out to the Motability Specialist at your local Volkswagen Retailer for specific vehicle and customisation wait times.

You can’t buy your Volkswagen directly from the Scheme at the end of your lease. But you may be able to ask your local Volkswagen Retailer to purchase the vehicle on your behalf, so that you can buy it from them.

No one can drive a Motability car on private insurance. Only the drivers who are named on the Certificate of Motor Insurance are covered, regardless of their own insurance coverage. For more information visit the Motability Scheme FAQ page.
