The Motability Scheme

The Motability Scheme offers an all-inclusive package that allows anyone in receipt of either: the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HMRC DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP), the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), to use their mobility allowance to lease a car, scooter, powered wheelchair or wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Rather than collecting a PIP allowance (Personal Independence Payment) this can be exchanged to lease a vehicle from a manufacturer using the Motability Operations programme.

The HRMC-DLA can be awarded to disabled children aged three and above. So, if you are a parent or guardian of a child who receives the allowance, you can order a car for use on their behalf. As long as you, or your child, receives either the HRMC-DLA or WPMS you are eligible to lease a car through Motability. 

Motability Scheme customers are now able to take advantage of OVO's "Charge Anytime" tariff. Customers will benefit from a lower rate of 7p per kWh, any time, day or night.

Customers who order a new electric vehicle from 01/07/24 to 30/09/25 will be eligible for up to 30,000 free miles¹. You can get up to 10,000 free miles when you first add Charge Anytime and up to 10,000 additional miles each year for two years if you stay with Charge Anytime¹.

You should expect to receive the allowance for the full length of the agreement you choose. However, Motability accepts applications as long as you have at least 12 months of your award remaining when you apply.

Two named drivers means that you can still lease a new car even if you do not drive – simply nominate two drivers who can drive on your behalf. There are a few rules surrounding who can drive your car:

• Named drivers should live within five miles of the disabled customer’s address. Motability will, however, consider requests to include drivers outside of this range where this is essential to support the customer’s mobility needs
• Drivers under 25 are restricted to cars with an ABI Insurance Group 16 or lower and with a power output of 120 brakehorse power (BHP) or less
• Only one named driver under 21 is allowed – this could be the disabled customer, or another driver living at the same address
