The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the Auto Express Hot Hatch of the Year 2026

Now in its eighth generation, the GTI continues to excite motorists around the world. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the GTI, a limited-run Golf GTI EDITION 50 was launched.

Power and performance

The Volkswagen Golf GTI EDITION 50 produces 325 PS and 420 Nm, making it the most powerful production Golf GTI built to date.

The Nürburgring front-wheel drive record

In May this year, the 325 PS anniversary model set a new record for front-wheel drive production vehicles on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. With racing and Volkswagen development driver Benjamin Leuchter at the wheel, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 completed this legendary 20.83-kilometre circuit in just under 7 mins 40 secs.

What makes it different to drive

The car features enhanced driving dynamics via a newly tuned DCC sports chassis, optimised front differential lock and high-precision progressive steering. These upgrades make it more track focused and performance oriented than standard GTI models, making it our most exhilarating GTI ever.

The GTI Performance package

The optional GTI Performance package adds a performance chassis set-up, 19-inch alloy wheels with semi-slick tyres and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system. It also features an overall weight reduction of 14kg and a lowered suspension, which is 20 mm lower than the standard Golf.

How the GTI began

The Golf GTI originated in the early 1970s as a ‘Sport Golf’ project, led by a small team of Volkswagen employees in Germany. The car made its debut in 1975 at the IAA motor show and launched in 1976 with 110 PS, combining performance with everyday usability.

The hallmarks of a GTI

The hallmark features of the Golf GTI include a red grille stripe with sporty detailing, tartan seats, driver-focused interiors, front-wheel drive and a philosophy of combining sporty performance with everyday practicality.

Eight generations, 2.5 million cars

The Mk1 GTI effectively defined the hot hatch formula, offering sports-car performance in an affordable, practical compact car. Demand for the first-generation model far exceeded expectations: 5,000 units were planned for initially, to at least recoup development costs, but in the end 461,700 first-generation Golf GTI models were sold worldwide. More than 2.5 million units have been produced in total – a continuous lineage across eight generations.
