A few simple steps to connecting your car

The smart online services from VW Connect or previously We Connect make your life easier – before, during and after every trip. Here we provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to easily connect your new or used car yourself and activate the functions.
Your dealership will also be happy to take you through the initial steps and start the activation process with you before vehicle handover.

Please note that you need to have a Volkswagen ID user account and a separate contract with Volkswagen AG concerning the use of mobile online services to be able to use the various functions.

01. Download the Volkswagen app

02. Create a Volkswagen ID user account

Log in to the app using your Volkswagen ID. If you have not yet set up a Volkswagen ID, the app will take you through each step of the registration process.

03. Add vehicle

Add your vehicle to your user account in the Volkswagen app using the vehicle identification number (VIN). You will find the VIN behind the windscreen of your Volkswagen or in the registration document.

04. Activate VW Connect or We Connect

Conclude the VW Connect or We Connect contract as shown in the app, then navigate to “Connect to VW Connect/We Connect” in your infotainment system. Follow the instructions here in the app.

The Volkswagen app enables you to conveniently access the digital services for your Volkswagen. You need to have the app installed to activate them and connect your vehicle. The app gives you access to the services of VW Connect, We Connect or Car‑Net and can, for example, create an itinerary and check the vehicle status. And you can use We Charge to charge your vehicle and pay on the move, making it particularly convenient.

    When buying a new vehicle, there is an option to use mobile online services from Volkswagen for an initial contract period offered for free. The VW Safe & Secure service package is excluded from this. There is currently no initial free contract period for this package. To use this package, you need to set up a valid Volkswagen ID user account and log in with a username and password. Once you have successfully set up the Volkswagen ID user account and connected it to your vehicle, you must conclude a separate contract for mobile online services with Volkswagen AG. You can do this online at www.myvolkswagen.net, via the Volkswagen app (available from the App Store and Google Play Store) or directly from your vehicle’s infotainment system. The use of mobile online services is enabled by an integrated internet connection. Volkswagen AG will be liable for the associated data costs incurred within Europe under the network coverage. The VW Comfort & Entertainment service package is excluded from this. A data plan of 20 GB per month is provided for this package by Volkswagen AG via external mobile communications partner Vodafone and can be used in the network coverage area within many European countries. Additional data, which may be used for the WIFI hotspot or apps from third-party providers, for instance, may also be purchased via Vodafone or Cubic. You can find more information on conditions, prices and countries supported on the external mobile phone provider’s website. Some features can be used via the Volkswagen app. A smartphone with a suitable iOS or Android operating system and SIM card including a data option with an existing mobile data contract or one to be agreed separately between you and your mobile data provider is required to use the free app. Please note that the use of mobile data connections – particularly abroad – may incur additional costs (e.g. roaming fees). Volkswagen AG accepts no liability for this.   The availability of the mobile online services included in the packages may differ depending on country, model, software and equipment. The services are available for the agreed contract period and may be subject to substantive changes or terminated during the contract period. More information is available at connect.volkswagen.com and from your Volkswagen dealership. Details of mobile data charges can be obtained directly from the relevant mobile phone provider.

    To take advantage of the VW Connect Plus/We Connect Plus trial period, you need a Volkswagen ID user account, a valid VW Connect/We Connect contract and verification as primary user, which means connecting your user account with the vehicle. The availability of the trial period depends on your vehicle's model year and production date. It's easy to check whether this is available for your vehicle in the Volkswagen Connect shop at connect-shop.volkswagen.com or the In-Car Shop in your Volkswagen's infotainment system. If you have already concluded a VW Connect (Plus)/We Connect (Plus) contract for your vehicle, the trial period cannot be activated. If you have taken over an active remaining contract period for your vehicle, as the new primary user, you can use this until the end of the contract period without incurring any costs. If there is no longer an active license from the previous primary user or the remaining contract period is less than three months, you have the option to activate and use the free three-month trial period instead. If the trial period is available for you and your vehicle, you can activate this on a one-time basis free of charge in the Volkswagen Connect shop. Following activation, you can try out the mobile online services from Volkswagen AG free of charge for three months. Please note that the trial period does not extend automatically. You have the option to purchase a suitable connectivity service via the web shop connect-shop.volkswagen.com or in the In-Car Shop in your Volkswagen’s infotainment system. For more information on the availability of the trial period, you can consult Volkswagen customer support free of charge at any time.
