Plug-in Hybrids/eHybrids (PHEVs)
Plug-in Hybrids or eHybrids have a large battery that needs to be plugged-in to charge, making them the most like an EV. This larger battery provides you with more full electric range, so you can do most short commutes and daily driving in all-electric mode. On longer trips the petrol engine is there for added peace of mind.
Mild Hybrids/eTSI (MHEVs)
Mild Hybrids have a small electric motor that works with the engine, aiding with acceleration and improving fuel efficiency. They are unable to run on electric only. They cannot be plugged in to charge, instead they charge using regenerative braking.
Self-Charging (HEVs)
Self-charging Hybrids or HEVs can alternate between an engine and an electric motor, depending on the circumstances. They can run on full electric power, but only at low speeds. They also rely on regenerative braking or the engine itself to charge its battery, and can’t be plugged in. They offer an even greater boost to fuel efficiency than Mild Hybrids (MHEVs).
