Since April 2025, electric car owners pay road tax just like everyone else. The EV exemption has ended.

Most EV owners pay £195 per year. If your electric car cost over £40,000 when new and was registered after April 2025, you'll pay an extra £425 luxury car tax, bringing your total to £620 per year.

There's one exception: if you have an older EV registered before April 2017, you only pay £20 annually.
The changes were backdated, so if you bought your EV when it was tax-free, you'll now need to start paying. DVLA will contact you about what you owe.

Electric cars work by using the energy stored in their lithium-ion batteries. The energy is converted from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) which in turn is used by the motor to turn the wheels. Topping the battery up to keep things moving requires plugging it into a charging outlet either at home or at a public charging station, think of it as refueling like you would with a traditional car at a petrol station. Many of Volkswagen's electric cars also feature regenerative braking, which uses energy created when you brake to help restore battery power.

Yes, there is. The UK Government offers a grant that applies a £1,500 discount on eligible electric cars costing up to £42,000.
