Inductive Charging: Everything You Need To Know
The Future of
Charging is
Wireless
Inductive charging technology is being developed by energy companies, suppliers, and large car manufacturers. This technology will allow electric car batteries to rapidly charge without a charging cable. They’re working together to standardise this technology, so that charging fits seamlessly into our everyday lives. Instead of searching for a vacant charging station, you’ll be able to charge from any spot in the carpark, or even while you’re waiting at a red light.
What is inductive charging?
Charging
without cables
Inductive charging is a wireless form of charging. Instead of a physical connection like a charging cable, your electric vehicle will only need to be near a charging pad to recharge.
How does inductive charging work?
Inductive charging relies on a stationary coil embedded in the ground that builds up a magnetic field. Then, when an electric vehicle is positioned directly above it, the electricity flows through the electromagnetic field, and into the car battery.
How long does inductive charging take?
Shorter and more
often is best
With inductive charging, you will be able to recharge just as quickly as you can with a rapid plug-in charger. Plug in chargers rely on longer charging sessions which can put a strain on your long-term battery health. But with inductive charging, you can improve the long-term health of your EV battery with four to five shorter charging cycles each day. Then you’ll only need to charger your electric vehicle at a charging station or a wallbox before longer journeys.
The future of inductive charging will allow us to snack charge anywhere we temporarily stop. That means you’ll be able to wirelessly charge in the supermarket carpark, doctor’s surgery, multi-storey car park, motorway service stations, petrol stations or even at traffic lights.
Which Volkswagen cars have inductive charging?
Since this technology is still in the development phase, there are currently no Volkswagen models available with inductive charging.
