Volkswagen casts Ewan McGregor as its newest Global Ambassador
Throughout his career, Ewan McGregor has starred in iconic films including Star Wars, Trainspotting, and Moulin Rouge. His latest role as Volkswagen’s Global Ambassador may not be in front of the cameras, but one he was nevertheless born to play.
Ever since he used money saved working as a hotel dishwasher to buy a Beetle, Ewan has been a huge Volkswagen fan. Nowadays, he owns an impressive collection of classic cars including three Beetles and a T1 bus lovingly restored to its original colour.
To celebrate Ewan becoming our Global Ambassador, we invited him to take a behind-the-scenes tour of our factory in Wolfsburg. “It was a big day for me,” he told us “I have been a Volkswagen enthusiast all my life.” He was shown the ID. Buzz production line and saw how it’s transformed from a metal shell into a fully-electric camper.
To see and meet some of the employees and to watch the robots was just amazing. I was like a kid in a candy store.Ewan McGregor
Ewan’s passion for sustainable driving runs deep - he’s even converted his 1954 Beetle into an electric car. When we asked why he decided to convert he explained,
“My most beloved car is my oval ‘54 Volkswagen Beetle, and I just thought I’d use it more if it was electric. And I was right, I use it all the time in the traffic in L.A. I just love it, and now I can hear my passengers all the time when they are talking – before it was pretty loud.”
We couldn’t let our new Ambassador leave us empty-handed, so we sent him to create his very own ID. Buzz in Hanover. When asked what features he chose and he replied, “I can share with you that it will be orange.” before giving us his opinion on our latest electric creation.
Generally, I think the ID. Buzz is a practical, safe, but really fun vehicle. You don’t experience this so often with new cars. The ID. Buzz has really got character. That is unusual for a new car, and it puts a smile on my face.Ewan McGregor
And what’s the first thing he’ll do once his ID. Buzz arrives? Ewan tells us he’ll most likely take to the coastline near his California home and take the Pacific Coast Highway up to San Francisco.
Before we parted ways, there was one thing we were keen to know; if Ewan McGregor was a car, what would he be? We were very flattered by his answer. After a little chuckle, he replied,
"I think a beetle. In the museum in the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, I had the chance to look at one of the first Ferdinand Porsche Beetles. At that moment I just realised that I love this car more than any other car. I love the shape of it. Just everything about it."
