With home charging points being simple to install, and ZapMaps recently annoucing there are now more charging stations than filling stations in the UK, charging your electric vehicle from home or work has never been easier. All you need is a household socket or Wallbox that’s been professionally installed.
The cable and power sockets are completely waterproof and weatherproof so nothing can stand in the way of you powering up your vehicle.
For added peace of mind, we use lithium-ion technology for our batteries as they’re proven to be the most effective at holding their charge. We’re so confident in their performance that all our batteries come with an 8 year or 99,360 mile warranty – whichever comes first.

Does it really matter?
The benefit of AC (alternating current) is that it’s what standard UK plug sockets use, so everywhere has it. It’s the most common method of vehicle charging. However, there’s a speedier way! By using DC (direct current) you can reach speeds of either 22kW or 50kW. We call it rapid charge because it’s over 10x the speed of the mains power you’ll find at home.
You can charge your car with DC power at CCS (Combined Charging System) stations, and our electric vehicles are available with the optional CCS socket for you to use when in a rush.
Three different connection types: mains, type 2 and CSS
There are three different types of plug connection that you can use with your Volkswagen electric or hybrid car.
- Mains charging: This is the standard 3 pin plug** you use for most household electrical items.
- Type 2: This is what your home wall box uses. Lots of public charge points also use this type of plug.
- CSS: This is what you’ll find on rapid charge points. It provides the fastest charge times.
Keep your e-up! powered and ready to roll
Charging your vehicle at home or away is simple. At home you can get a professionally installed socket or Wallbox installed in your garage or on your driveway, and when you’re on the road you can visit a public charging station. There are even schemes that provide a discount to employers who install charge points at work.
Worried about whether you can still charge in the rain? All the charging equipment is completely weather-proof, so you can install a socket or Wallbox on exterior wall without concern. The coupling is so tight that even if it’s raining or snowing you can still connect without the fear of water coming into contact with the electricity.

How do I charge my electric vehicle?
Charging is just like refuelling – you just have a few extra options
The home of recharging
Charging at home doesn’t require any big installations or fancy kit. You can use any normal plug*, or arrange for a professional to install a Wallbox at home. After that all you have to do is plug your car in. It’s just like having your own personal filling station on your driveway. Just like your mobile phone, you can simply plug your car in before you go to bed and when you wake up it will be fully charged. Use the remote control key to lock your car and the charging starts.
The Wallbox is more powerful than your standard household socket. It’s high-voltage so you need to have it professionally installed – there are government grants available to help with the cost. Just like the standard electrical socket, you plug your cable into one end, and connect to your vehicle at the other. Then lock the door with the remote control key and a green flashing light will signal that charging is in progress.
Let’s speed things up
If you decide to have a Wallbox installed then there’s a choice of three different power outputs and charging speeds available.
Slow (3.6kW): 1.6x faster than a 3-pin plug – these take 6-8 hours to charge your car.
Medium (7.2kW): 3x faster than a 3-pin plug – these take 3-4 hours to charge your car.
Fast (22kW): 10x faster than a 3-pin plug – these can charge your car to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes.

Checking your charge levels and range
Just like when driving a diesel or petrol car, you need to keep an eye on your car’s energy levels so you don’t get caught short.
In the e-up!, e-Golf and GTE's you can find your charging status on the instrument cluster and the radio navigation system, or on the maps + more display. If you want to find out the status of your battery but you’re nowhere near your vehicle then just open up the Car-Net e-Remote app and it will show you everything you need to know.
The fastest way to power up your electric vehicle.
80% charge. Just 30 minutes. Yes, really.
Rapid chargers are the fastest way to charge your electric vehicle. They’re often found in motorway services or on main roads and they require a high power DC or AC supply to get you charged up in minutes instead of hours. Incredibly, they’re capable of charging your electric vehicle to 80% in as little as 30 minutes! The cable will already be tethered to the power supply and it will have one of three connectors attached. Simply locate the CSS socket that’s compatible with your car, plug it in and relax while your car charges at lightning speed.
*Please ensure your plug is standard, fully functional and correctly installed before using it to charge your car.
**Home charging using a domestic socket will depend on the condition and suitability of the wiring in your home. Always consult a qualified electrician before charging when using a domestic socket for the first time, or, if the socket is to be used as the primary source of charging. Domestic sockets on the same circuit as other appliances, particularly those in frequent use, will draw additional amperage which may result in a breaker switch being 'tripped'. Establishing a separate circuit for home charging will help ensure your electric vehicle is supplied with a consistent, uninterrupted current. For optimum charging, we recommend installing an electric vehicle charging point at home.
