For petrol engines we recommend using a fuel with a low sulphur content or sulphur-free fuel, which will help reduce consumption. For most petrol vehicles, standard unleaded (95RON) is fine, however for the GTI and R models we recommend super-unleaded (98RON). For diesel models, we recommend the use of diesel fuel containing up to 7% Biodiesel. Filling station forecourts supply diesel (to the standard EN590), which can contain up to 7% Biodiesel with 93% Fossil fuel.

In September 2021, the standard petrol grade in the UK changes from E5 to E10. This means regular unleaded will contain up to 10 per cent bio-ethanol, instead of the current five per cent. Most cars built since 2000 are compatible with E10 however if in doubt, check your vehicle using this list from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

The Department for Transport claims that the introduction of E10 petrol will help reduce transport-related CO2 emissions and should see a reduction in petrol prices. However, as the new mix has a slightly lower energy density than E5, this means fuel consumption will increase slightly when using E10. As a result, fuel costs for petrol cars are estimated to increase by 1.6% after the switch.
